I am helping with a fun Halloween event that you may want to attend.
Each year around this time, Big Basin Redwoods State Park presents, The Missing Arm of William Waddell.
You join the staff for a 1-hour, 1/2-mile, silly and slightly spooky night hike through the deep, dark, redwood forest. Volunteers and park staff reveal the haunted tale of Big Basin’s last lumber mill owner and his disastrous encounter with a grizzly bear!
The fictional story is told in the spirit of ghost stories shared around the campfire. But it’s not too spooky for children. It is an easy hike, and the trail is stroller accessible and flat.
I tend to be a very “serious” person, but this event cracks me up! 🙂 If you are in the area you may get a kick out of it, too.
There is no charge for the event. But day-use visitors must pay the $10/car parking fee. If you want to camp overnight, it costs a little more. One option is to go to the event, camp overnight, and then go on one of the excellent docent-led guided hikes the next day before leaving the park.
This year’s event starts at 7:00 PM on Saturday, October 25. Registration will start at 6:30 PM. Hikes leave every 15 minutes beginning at 7:00 PM. For more information, call (831) 338-8883.
