Missing Hiker Found at Home Depot

Missing hiker John Addle has been found alive in Home Depot after five days of searching.  The solo hiker was reported missing by his wife March 26, when she needed someone to take out the trash.

Addle, 36, was hiking in the Santa Cruz Mountains and last seen in Montebello Open Space Preserve on March 24.

Police spokesman, Jim Bridger, stated that Addle became lost after wandering off the trail and into the big box store.  “The terrain is extremely difficult.  There are narrow aisles with large shelves on each side.  Some areas are extremely remote and you won’t encounter a sales associate for days.”

Searchers were in contact with Addle briefly before his phone battery failed.  Rescuers employed K9 search teams in an effort to find him.

Addle tried to make himself visible by wearing a bright orange fleece jacket.  But the strategy backfired, as he was in Home Depot.  He also fashioned a signal mirror from materials he foraged in the bathroom aisle.

Suffering from exhaustion and dehydration, Addle constructed a shelter from the abundant tools and plywood.  There he waited for rescuers to find him.

Rescuers credit Addle’s survival and good health to his preparations, decision-making, and the shelter he was able to build.  Around 60 people from various state and federal agencies participated in the search.

HAPPY APRIL FOOLS!

A Gentle Reminder

To get serious for a moment, becoming lost is the leading cause of searches for missing hikers.  Always have a map and compass.  Check your position often and “stay found.”  In remote areas, turn your cell phone off or place it in Airplane Mode at the start of your hike.  This will prevent the battery from draining while the phone searches for signal.  And if you do become lost, here are some tips that can help you find your way back.  Most importantly, let someone who cares about you know where you are going and when you will return.  Give them explicit instructions and phone numbers to call if you are overdue.
