I want to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving! The holiday celebrates the fall harvest, the change of seasons, and generosity. It allows us to take a moment from our busy lives to appreciate the family around us and to be thankful for the good things in our lives.
Indigethanx
I spent a delightful evening recently at an “Indigethanx” celebration. The American Indian resource center at a nearby university sponsored the event.
As you might expect, Native Americans have a more complex view of the holiday than many of us. The optional pot-luck dinner celebrated indigenous culture and the role it has played in the formation of our nation.
The evening began with a traditional blessing from an Amah Mutsun elder. His combination of wit, prayer, and song was a great beginning to the evening.
Some of the Native American students from the university prepared traditional dishes from their tribes. I greatly enjoyed the Apache Green Chili Stew.
I am thankful to have been able to attend, as I am not Native American. A terrific time was had by all!
A Turkey Story
I am spending time with my family this week and will not post new articles for the next few days. In the meantime, I would like to leave you with an amusing turkey story from a past hike. It was the first time I had seen this turkey behavior.
